Most people fixate on the number at the top - but the ERMI score can genuinely mislead you in both directions. A tidy score can hide a serious mould, and an alarming one can be driven by a harmless, super-common species.
What actually matters is which mould species showed up, how much, and - the part almost no one explains - whether they point to a hidden leak or just too much humidity. Those are two completely different problems, with two completely different fixes. That's the bit I read for you.

I'm Jess - a certified Advanced Mould Testing Technician, and someone who recovered from mould illness (CIRS) in my own home. I read ERMI reports constantly, from both the major Australian and US labs. I know exactly how they can mislead people, and I'll give you the honest, plain-English version - the read I wish I'd had when I was staring at my own confusing ERMI report years ago.

FAQ
What's a "good" ERMI score? There's no official safe threshold, but as a rough guide: under 2 is the level often considered comfortable for mould-sensitive people, 2–5 is generally fine for the general population, and above 5 warrants a closer look. But honestly - the score matters far less than the species behind it, which is exactly what the analysis focuses on.
What does my HERTSMI-2 score mean? HERTSMI-2 scores five key CIRS-related moulds: under 11 is generally considered safe for re-entry, 11–15 borderline, and over 15 not recommended for anyone mould-sensitive. I'll explain what's driving yours - sometimes a high number comes largely from one very common mould.
Is ERMI accurate? It's a useful screening tool, but it has real limits - it can't tell you where the mould is, it can under-read some heavy moulds (like Stachybotrys), and a standard panel doesn't test for a few water-damage species at all. Part of my job is telling you what your particular result can and can't be trusted to say.
Do you tell me where the mould is? No, no dust test can. ERMI tells you whether there's likely a problem; finding where needs a physical inspection. I'll tell you if that's your sensible next step.
Which labs' reports can you analyse? Any of them - Envirobiomics, NSJ EnviroSciences and others. Whatever format your report's in, send it through.
